The Dangers That Surround Us (Metamusica, 2015)

Sound Engineering: Diego Lezcano

A project based on spontaneous improvisations without any kind of score or previous composition, Los peligros que nos rodean (The Dangers That Surround Us) refers to very different sound landscapes as dissimilar as neoclassicism, background music and impressionist jazz. This solo piano recording special feature is that it was created by somebody who is not a composer or pianist. In spite of this the result he obtained is surprising.

Sound projector, by Ulises Conti

About ten years ago I had the idea of a collective musical project, in which I would invite several people who were outsiders to the world of music. The purpose was to compose a work for piano to be able to prove that everybody can write music and create a fertile musical environment. All that without needing to study ancient musical methods or without being victims of academic machinery, structured by a strict protocol.
I do not exactly remember how the idea of playing with several friends and offering them such an experience came up in my mind. However, in spite of never having taken on this kind of project, its iconographic image, i.e., somebody playing the piano in my studio, survived in some place in my head.
One afternoon, many years later, I was talking with the composer of this record when we realized that both of us had this related interest because he had also played with the idea of composing a series of improvised pieces or songs for the piano, looking at them from the perspective of somebody who is not a musician. He did not have any academic training and for a long time had been playing music that just came to him on a relative’s piano. This music did not have any pattern or was it the result of a previous idea. After talking several times about this subject at his workplace, the La Internacional Argentina bookstore, we went to my house where he ran to the piano. After listening to him improvise for a while, I realized that he had great musical potential. Right there we decided to undertake this project together. At the studio, Moguilevsky played a series of spontaneous pieces. I gave him a few pointers that would serve him as a compass in his own exploration of sounds, where he could use a composing process to liberate the sounds from the idea and commitment to the musical form, while thinking of the composer and the performer as a projector of sound, using signals, states, range, dynamics and duration, searching for sensitivity in the language of a new sound experience.
